176 Vari-Mu Limiting Amplifier – Chassis
The “176” Vari-Mu Limiting Amplifier provides fast, responsive compression without sounding overly aggressive, and its release control is nothing short of exceptional. The subtle harmonic coloration from its tubes and transformers brings a warm, natural enhancement to any signal passing through it. This is a true masterpiece, capable of taming or elevating any audio source you feed into it. So you want to build it, right?
THIS KIT IS PREORDERS ONLY, IT WILL TAKE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME BEFORE SHIPPING

Key Features of the 176 Vari-Mu Limiting Amplifier:
– Fast, responsive compression: It reacts quickly to changes in the input signal, allowing it to handle fast transients without sounding harsh or aggressive.
– Smooth release control: The release time of the compressor, which dictates how quickly the signal returns to its uncompressed state, is highly regarded for its smoothness.
– Harmonic coloration: Tubes and transformers inside the unit introduce subtle harmonic distortion, adding warmth and a natural tonal enhancement to the sound.
What you get
Included are the chassis and PCBs needed to build a 176 Limiting amplifier.
The chassis is all metal “made in Germany” and 1:1 true to the original.
The PCB set includes the 2 PCBs and 3 turret boards, already stuffed with metal inserts, exactly like the originals.
What You Need to Build It
You’ll need to source your own components. Tubes, transformers, wires, meters, knobs etc. are NOT included. (A Bill Of Materials will soon be available, linked to your purchase). If you’re interested in a full kit, please visit our 176 Complete Kit page
You will also need soldering skills, a decent soldering iron, and the ability to read schematics at a basic level.
This DIY tube compressor is a project for advanced builders. Some components require point-to-point wiring, while others are soldered onto PCBs, and there is a significant amount of wiring involved.
Building the 176 Vari-Mu Amplifier
– Safety first: Before starting, watch the safety video on how to handle high tube voltages. Tube circuits can operate at high voltages that can be dangerous if mishandled.
– Build guide: An extensive step-by-step guide with pictures is provided to ensure that you assemble the kit correctly. Each part of the process is documented to help you follow along easily.
